Proverbs: Get Wisdom – Wisdom and The Friend
Proverbs 18:24 “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” May the same be said of all of us, by God’s grace. This is a startling statement and one that encourages my heart. I know that in Christ I am called to serve my brothers and sisters in Christ even more so that I might serve my own family. God, when He saves us, calls us to a high standard of service. And being a friend who sticks closer than a brother is just that, Godly service and love rooted in the Cross.

Proverbs: Get Wisdom – Wisdom and Words
Proverbs 18:4 “The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.” One could write a book unpacking this thunderous statement. The deep waters of our words are murky, laced with hidden meaning and questionable motives. It says elsewhere in Proverbs that transgression is not lacking where many words are present. Our sin is often just under the surface of our words. But wisdom is like a bubbling brook: clear, pure, refreshing, and sustaining. God’s Word is wisdom. Let us run to it as our source, not the murky, deep waters of fallible men.

Proverbs: Get Wisdom – Wisdom and the Fool
Proverbs 12:15 “The way of the fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” There are many characteristics of a fool wrapped up within the book of Proverbs, and this example cuts to the quick. How often, in the blindness of our sin and the pride of our hearts, do we assume we are right? Those who are wise assume the opposite and seek advice. Let us assess our hearts and look to Scripture and fellow believers in the pursuit of wisdom.

Proverbs: Get Wisdom – The Sluggard
Proverbs 6:10-11 “A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.” The life of the wise is not one characterized by rest, relaxation, or leisure. No, the Bible teaches that the wise are to toil, labor, and always be vigilant. Whether we are laboring for the sake of the gospel or the sake of our families, we should take note of the ant (v. 5), not the sluggard.

06/19/2011 – Ken Legan preaches
Genesis 43-47 – God Creates, God Redeems: The Gospel According to Joseph, Pt. 4
Gen. 46:3 “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.” It is astounding to think that God, in His infinite wisdom and knowledge, can use slavery for good. But, we learn in Scripture that the slavery of the sons of Israel is certainly God’s plan, and he uses it for His glory and to bless His people (Deut. 10:22).

If you have been reading through the Bible with us this year, you may, like me, have been struck by the wrath of God toward sin. God’s wrath is real and it is just, but in my pride I often look at it as extreme. The story of Nadab and Abihu from Leviticus 10 comes to mind, when God consumed two priests with fire because they improperly used incense before His holy presence. Or when God caused the earth to open up and swallow the rebellious Korah, his family, and all their possessions in Numbers 16.

The truth of the matter, however, is that God’s wrath is not extreme. It is just. What is extreme is His grace. One of the clearest pictures of this in the Old Testament is found in Exodus 33 where we read:

18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

We cannot see God’s glory and live because we are sinners. But God, in the extremity of His grace makes a way for us to not only glimpse His glory as Moses did, but to approach His throne, be in His presence, and even to dwell within us. He hides us in the cleft of the rock and protects us from His wrath. The name of that Rock is Jesus.

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee;
Let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure; safe from wrath and make me pure.

These lyrics come from Rock of Ages, the 1750 hymn written by Augustus Toplady, and they carry some of the most striking images of God’s extreme grace towards sinners. The song expresses rich doctrinal truth using rich and beautiful imagery. It clearly communicates our desperate need for salvation, and it makes plain that our only hope is Jesus Christ, the Rock of Ages, who was wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities.

I would encourage you to read through the lyrics below. You can also buy and listen to the song here.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee;
Let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure; save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law’s commands;
Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.

For rehearsal date: Monday May 16, 2011 at 7pm.

We will be spending most of our time that night on the first week's set, with a particular focus on the new song, Rock of Ages. This hymn from 1725 is a tour de force of Christ-centered doctrine, poetic imagery, and heart-wrenching dependence upon God. I am looking forward to working through this song together. If you would please make time to listen to the song, review the lyrics. Additionally, it would be beneficial to meditate on Ex. 33:12-23 and reflect on how Christ is our rock.

For the service in the park, Sarah and I will carry that ourselves. That will free up you all to be with your families, fellowship with invited guests, and celebrate our Creator's goodness that can be seen all around us!

Genesis 37-39 – God Creates, God Redeems: The Gospel According to Joseph, Pt. 1
Gen. 40:23b “And whatever he did, the LORD made it succeed with him.” Reading this one might think Joseph led a comfortable life, but his was a life characterized by great suffering and persecution. However, the circumstances of his life did not define his level of trust in the Lord. Joseph’s faith was steadfast, and his trust in God did not waver, at least not that we know. God blessed everything that Joseph put his hand to, and in his being sold into slavery and sent to prison we see God’s sovereign hand at work. It is comforting to us to know that the faithfulness God shows to Joseph is also the faithfulness He shows us, for our God never changes.

Genesis 32-36 – God Creates, God Redeems: The Gospel According to Jacob, Pt. 4
Gen. 33:10b “For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me.” Jacob draws a parallel here between his brother Esau and God, both of whom have cause to mete out punishment upon Jacob for his sin. However, both show him unmerited favor. I don’t believe that Jacob is seeing his brother like God, but rather he is seeing the grace of God more clearly, for not long after he clearly identifies the God of his father Isaac as his own (v. 20). We also have received grace from God in that he poured out his just wrath for our sins upon His own Son.

Genesis 28-30:24 – God Creates, God Redeems: The Gospel According to Jacob, Pt. 2
Gen 28:14a “Your offspring will be like the dust of the earth…” We’ve heard that before. God, in His covenant with Abraham and Isaac, made the same statement, and now he makes it to Jacob in a dream. As this story plays out, though, we see countless failures of men. But out of this apparent mess, God brings Jacob many children and we begin to see the fulfillment of God’s promise. So, even in the midst of chaos and confusion, deception and deceit, God is faithful to fulfill His covenant.
